Movie Review: Ek Mein Aur Ek Tu

MOVIE REVIEW
MOVIE: EK MEIN AUR EK TU
DIRECTOR: Shakun Batra
GENRE: romance
CAST: Kareena Kapoor, Imran Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, Boman Irani
Ek mein aur ek tu, which was released on 14th of February, may not be the perfect movie to watch with one’s valentine but it would surely serve as a nice entertainer for the less cheesy couple who want to lighten up a little.
Rahul, (Imran khan) is an up-tight architect of the reputed Kapoor family, who has been trained to satisfy his father’s dreams of his son getting a job in the top 10 firms and is pestered by his class conscious mother who wants him to get betrothed to some rich socialite’s daughter. However, he presently resides in Las Vegas, unemployed. Riana Briganza (kareena kapoor) is a chilled out chick who has no rules and no punishments set by her family. She too, like Rahul is trying her luck at job interviews but is a complete opposite of Rahul in character.  The story begins to take shape when they meet on Christmas Eve to solve a prior misunderstanding. It was when they decide to spend the Christmas together as both of them don’t have company that they get drunk and get married by mistake. The story goes on to portray how their friendship becomes stronger even though they decide to annul the marriage. It is a story of friendship which later has under-tones of love, though one sided.
The promos and the trailer are rather misleading as they do not give the actual idea of the movie but show only the glamour and pomp which is included. If one accepts that that’s what trailers are meant for, the trailer of this movie has successfully caught millions of eyeballs, thereby, leading them to spend valuable bucks on the movie. There is also a misconception that Ek Mein Aur Ek Tu is a remake of the Hollywood flick, What Happens in Vegas. Except for the fact that they get married because of the over dosage of alcohol, it isn’t in anyway related to it.
The story is knit in an interesting way though it is not an attention catcher. In fact, the first half can be really boring as there is nothing much happening except that they get to know each other better. For the better or worse, there are certain abrupt moments in the film which did not sync very well in the movie. The first one is when he, from the middle of nowhere, gets the urge to prove it to Riana that he isn’t uptight and all of a sudden takes up an entire tray of tequila shots to become ‘loose’ and to ‘have fun’. The sudden change in character is not very pleasing. Another such moment is when he realises that he is in love and says “I love her” over a kuch kuch hota hai song. The last abrupt moment is shallow and funny as it is when he tries to kiss her saying “thanks Ree, for changing my life”. Here, the poor quality of the script and dialogues are exposed.
Speaking about the roles played by the actors in the movie, there are few qualms. Only Kareena could have justified the role of Riana Braganza and she did not over do one bit and looked her usual best. Imran Khan was not so great but he carried himself very well as the serious boy-next-door, a character that is relatively new to him. Ratna Pathak Shah did a good job as the class obsessed mother. Her character added a comical angle to the movie. A little disappointing was the fact that Boman Irani’s potential was not used to the fullest. It might be because he did not have a very big role to play in the first place.
The dialogues in the movie are not pleasing at all. The impact of the movie would have been greater if the script was improved upon. The screen play was made attractive with the Vegas atmosphere and this was the strong aspect of the entire movie. The music is equally attractive as each of the song has a nice catch to it. The audience seem to be specially rapt with the song, “aunty ji” for the same reason. The director has used a few aspects powerfully to generate talks about the movie among public such as making Imran Khan’s wife, Avantika, appear for a short while in the song.
The movie has a surprising climax which is generally not accepted by the Indian audience. However, the director has been careful about this aspect. The movie is not a total spoiler; it ends on a rather jolly note.
The movie makes for a good one time watch even though the first half might prove to bore you to a certain extent. All in all, it is a neat movie even though one does not miss anything great if this movie is skipped.
